This is a template of a starting page with which to create a new single-page portal. It provides a starting point from which to develop a portal further.

This template is designed for the creation of new portals. Please do not replace old portals with this template.

Usage

To use the template, place this as the only content of a portal page: {{subst:Basic portal start page}}

If you name the portal to a subject that has a matching root article, navigation footer, and category with the same subject title as the portal, then {{Basic portal start page}} will usually create a complete ready-to-use portal. If any of the those pages are about a synonymous but different subject, the affected sections will have erroneous content that will need to be replaced. You do that by changing the page title called in the affected sections. For fastest portal creation, choose subjects with these support structures in place. To check for them, do a page preview first when using the template.

Then click on Preview, and inspect for completeness. Check the image slide show for multiple images. Look over the portal for Lua errors.

If the portal appears complete, or you are prepared to complete it even though it is not, save the page. Then follow these development steps:

1. If the intro section includes a red link or error message, replace the {{PAGENAME}} code with the title of the subject's root article.
2. If the "Selected articles" section is empty (or has an error message instead of content), either change the sourcepage name with the appropriate navigation template name, or use Template:Transclude excerpts as random slideshow, and specify the names of the specific articles you want covered in the section.
3. If the "Selected images" section is empty (or has an error message), replace the sourcepage name provided with another sourcepage, or filenames. You can use multiple sourcepages and filenames as desired. See Template:Transclude files as random slideshow for detailed instructions.
4. If the Did you know section is empty, it will be automatically hidden. To add or adjust parameters, see {{Transclude selected recent additions}}.
5. If the In the news section is empty, it will be automatically hidden. To add or adjust parameters, see {{Transclude selected current events}}.

Note: There are other ways of creating a portal using different architectures. The Basic portal start page uses automated features to produce a portal on a single page, that almost completely maintains itself once completed.
