විද්යාව යන වචනය අතීතයේ භාවිතා වී ඇත්තේ බුදු දහමේ එන අනිච්ඡ, දුක්ඛ, අනත්ථ යන ලෝකයේ යථා ස්වභාවය පිලිබඳ අවබෝධය හැඳින්වීමටය. බුද්ධ දේශනයට අනුව, ආර්ය අෂ්ඨාංගික මාර්ගය වැඩූවිට ප්රඥාව සහ විද්යාව ලැබෙයි. The United States's National Nanotechnology Initiative website defines nanotechnology as "the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications."
