Usage

This template is put at the top of a biographical article to explain to readers which part of a name is the family name.

This template has one required parameter, and multiple optional parameters:

• |1=, required, the surname or family name of the subject.
• |2=, optional, triggers different text based on the language (see below). Required for |lang=Manchu
• |3=, optional, for transliterated names or there are multiple name types
• |nd=, optional, use this parameter for Dutch names when a marital name is involved
• |lang=, optional, the country/origin of the name; links to related articles if they exist

Supported languages

The |lang= parameter will trigger a link to <lang> name (for example, Arabic name) if the page exists. Exceptions are listed below:

First parameter only

Regardless of language, this template requires a first parameter.

  මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Van der Sar ය.
• {{Family name hatnote|Namık Kemal|lang=Ottoman Turkish}}:
  මෙම Ottoman Turkish style name තුළ, given name වන්නේ Namık Kemal ය. There is no family name.

Second parameter

The second parameter triggers different wording depending on the language.

Catalan	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, first or paternal වාසගම වන්නේ Miró and the second or maternal family name is Ferrà; both are generally joined by the conjunction "i" ය.
Congolese	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Tshisekedi and the post-surname is Tshilombo ය.
Spanish	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, first or paternal වාසගම වන්නේ Gómez and the second or maternal family name is Cruz ය.
Basque Galician	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, first වාසගම වන්නේ Arana and the second is Goiri ය.
Chinese Chinese Indonesian	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, family name වන්නේ Han and Su is a generation name ය.
Dutch (no |nd=) Germanic Romance	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Van der Sar, not Sar ය.
Korean	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, පවුල් නාමය වන්නේ Lee. අවධි නාමය හෝ ලේඛන නාමය ඇති විට, වාසගම වන්නේ Han ය.
Slavic Turkic	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Wołkowski, sometimes transliterated as Wolkowski ය.
Cambodian Hmong Vietnamese	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Phan ය. In accordance with Vietnamese custom, this person should be referred to by the given name, Khải.
Manchu	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, given name වන්නේ Oboi ය. In accordance with Manchu custom, it should be used solely or with titles but not with the clan name Gūwalgiya.
Ottoman Turkish	මෙම Ottoman Turkish style name තුළ, given name වන්නේ Osman Hamdi, the title is Bey, and there is no family name ය.
Mongolian	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, given name වන්නේ Tsedenbal ය. Yumjaagiin is a patronymic, not a family name.
All others	"A, not B": මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Wilsonමිස, Clark නොවේ. ය.

Third parameter

With the exception of |lang=Toponymic, the third parameter is used for transliterated names and/or a second name type

Language	Example Output
Toponymic	මෙම English name තුළ, toponymic surname වන්නේ London ය. It is not a family name, and the person should be referred to by the given name, Edward.
Ottoman Turkish	මෙම Ottoman Turkish style name තුළ, given name වන්නේ Ali, the title is Pasha, and the family name is Çandarlızade ය.
Manchu Vietnamese	මෙම ලිපිය තුළ, වාසගම වන්නේ Ngô, but is often simplified to Ngo in English-language text ය. In accordance with Vietnamese custom, this person should be referred to by the given name, Diệm.
