The enchanting Sembuwatta Lake, nestled in the Elkaduwa estate of the Matale district, is a breathtaking haven often likened to paradise. Constructed in 1945 by the British (Scottish) founders of Elkaduwa estate, the lake initially served as a reservoir to generate hydro power for a tea factory. However, the decline of the tea industry in 1987 left the lake abandoned and the estate in disrepair. In 2005, a transformative figure, Mr. Radley Dissage, an ex-army officer and president scout, took on the role of superintendent at Elkaduwa estate. With a military background and guidance from his parents and alma mater, Richmond College Galle, Mr. Radley embarked on a mission to revitalize the estate. Despite being new to the tea industry, he successfully elevated Elkaduwa estate's status, improving the quality of life for its residents. Mr. Radley's visionary approach extended to the resurrection of Sembuwatta Lake. He envisioned a tourist paradise and, facing resistance from traditional thinkers, systematically revitalized the lake and its surroundings. His plan included the creation of a swimming pool adjacent to the lake, providing tourists with the comfort of natural spring water even on sunny days. Continuously enhancing the site, Mr. Radley added captivating and adventurous features, turning it into a must-visit destination. For travelers approaching from Kandy, a 45-minute drive through Katugasthota and Wattegama towns leads to the Elkaduwa junction. From there, a 4km drive along the Hunugala road, followed by a right turn, brings visitors to the lake. Those coming from Matale can take the Elkaduwa road to reach the junction. Camping enthusiasts can enjoy a pack of facilities provided by the site owners for overnight stays, including a security guard/cook and camping equipment. However, only two groups of ten male tourists each are allowed to reserve the camping site in a single day, with extra charges for larger groups. Sembuwatta Lake welcomes both local and foreign tourists from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Visitors are encouraged to carry their swimwear and cameras to fully experience the beauty of the lake. A special acknowledgment is given to Mr. Radley, who dedicated his planting life to improving the living conditions of Elkaduwa estate workers and boosting the plantation company's productivity.
