I don't know whether there's a real future for a sinhala wikipedia, but at least as a romantic policy it's worth giving a try. I also share your sentiments about that television celebity sinhala professor. It's a tragedy when serious academics understand that they can earn money and fame much easily if they choose to talk BS in front of television cameras and in leasure sections of sunday newspapers - for the enjoyment of lazy petty bourgeois women. I'm amazed that this is the same guy who did great programs like "thun path rata" in SLBC during early '80ies.

and about 'ingirisi': I'm not in to hela hawla movement (although I highly admire Kumarathunga); I just found that easier compared to the proper way of typing "enGREEsi" which requires jumping through hoops. (anyways, after all that work, it doesn't render right on anything) Any idea why they chose only "rakaranse" and "yanse" for that gimmic especially when there was enough space available even for kundaliya that no one uses? - Greenleaf 09:31, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

RE: Stray articles

Yes greanleaf. I've noticed that too. Apparently some people had thought si is the encyclopedia for Slovenia. Only an sysop can delete the articles.

Which program do you use to type sinhala? I don't have XPSP2 so it's not possible for me to use the sinhala enablement thing. But I found this really nice little program called Sinhala text box. A friend of mine called Dasith designed it and he won an award from the SL govt for it.

This program has a small app called sinhala keyboard driver and you just have to launch it and you can start typing in ms word using kaputa/kandy/wijesekera layouts.

The best thing is that this also supports something they call "singlish". How it works is, you just have to type something in english and it'll automatically convert it to sinhala. For example, if you type wikipeedia in english the program will type it as wikipedia in sinhala. It's really nice.

Right now, it's just good ol' character map with XP. :-) I'm not familiar with wijesekara anyway, so i'll still have to pick keys. kaputa is a bit intuitive though, i might consider using something if it comes with kaputa layout.

I remember seeing the 'singlish' program - but at that time didn't see much use of it because i wasn't typing sinhala. Must have a look again. Greenleaf 04:53, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
