Thx DePiep. This change is more easily tested through Special:ExpandTemplates. The reason we don't see it here is because the line in question calls {{DMCA}} which itself calls {{Dated maintenance category}} passing a parameter that only applies categorization when its used in the main article namespace (note the |onlyarticles=yes bit). With the /testcases page being in the Template namespace, what we should see here is no change between the live and sandbox versions. Testing must be done in sequence at Special:ExpandTemplates since there is no side-by-side option but at least there you can see the categories change appropriately under the 'Preview' section as you change which template is applied.
The "Show preview" button can also be used in mainspace to test without applying changes. (Is that what you're referring to by "preview-live"?) The trick here is that the only changes should be to hidden categories and weirdly - the changes do show up in the rendered categories box at the bottom of the previewed page (which presumably requires personal settings active to show hidden categories) but the change is simultaneously excluded from the expandable report for "This page is a member of X hidden categories" that appears under the editing area. Meaning in preview mode, that report may show 3 hidden categories and then underneath that, the preview will render 5 or 6 hidden categories which includes the additional ones added with the previewed edit. The reverse can be seen when hidden categories are to be removed with a previewed edit. I can't explain the reason for this but it seems to suggest that the categories would be changed only if the edit in preview is subsequently saved. --N8wilson 14:07, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
