This template should be followed by a complete and specific description of the request, so that an editor unfamiliar with the subject matter could complete the requested edit immediately. This template should be used only to request edits to fully protected pages that are either uncontroversial or supported by consensus. If the proposed edit might be controversial, discuss it on the protected page's talk page before using this template. To request that a page be protected or unprotected, make a protection request.

Place {{editprotected}} on a talk page to request an edit of the corresponding fully protected page. It should be accompanied by a clear and specific description of the requested change. Providing the new sentences or code in your request, if possible, will expedite the process. The template should not be used on semiprotected pages, as no administrator assistance is required to edit them.
Administrators may decline to make any edit, especially if it is controversial, violates Wikipedia policy, or does not have evidence of consensus.
The talk page on which the request is placed is automatically categorised into Category:Wikipedia protected edit requests. Administrators will check this category for protected edit requests to process. Consider posting a request at WP:RPP as well, particularly if the edit is controversial or significantly changes the page content.

Once a request is handled, it's best to leave the {{editprotected}} tag as an un-transcluded tag, for example, by changing it to: {{tlx|editprotected}}. This removes the message box from the talk page and removes the talk page from the category, while still leaving a record of the request.
