එස්ටෝනියාව නිල වශයෙන් හඳුන්වනු ලබන්නේ එස්ටෝනියා සමූහාණ්ඩුව නමිනි. මෙය උතුරු යුරෝපයේ පිහිටි රටකි. එහි දේශසීමා උතුරින් ෆින්ලන්ඩ් ගල්ෆ්ද, බටහිරින් බෝල්ටික් මුහුද ද, දකුණින් ලැට්වියාව (343Km) හා නැගෙනහිරින් රුසියානු එක්සත් සමූහාණ්ඩුව ද වෙයි. එස්ටෝනියා ප්රදේශය වර්ග කි.මී. 45,227(17,472 වර්ග මීටරය) පුරා පැතිර ඇති අතර සෞම්ය කාලීන දේශගුණයකින් යුක්තයි. එස්ටෝනියානු වන් සෞම්ය ජාතියකි. ඔවුන්ගේ භාෂාව ෆිනිෂ් භාෂාවට නෑකම් කියයි. නවීන එස්ටෝනියා නාමය මුලින්ම ගෙනෙනු ලැබුවේ රෝමානු ඉතිහාසඥයෙකු වන පැසිටස්ය. ඔහුගේ ග්රන්ථයෙහි ලියවී ඇත්තේ ජර්මානියා (98 AD) එස්ටි නැමැති ජනසමූහයක විස්තරයකි. පුරාණ ස්ටැන්ඩියානු පනතකට අනුව එයිස්ට්ලන්ඩ් නැමැති ප්රදේශයක තිබී ඩැනිෂ්, ජර්මන්, ඕලන්ද, ස්විඩිස් සහ නොර්විජියානු එස්ලන්ඩ් වකවානුවේදී සොයා ගන්නා ලදි. එස්ට්රියා සහ කොස්ට්රියා මුල් යුගයේ භාවිතා වූ ලතින් නම් වේ. එස්ටෝනියා නිදහසට පෙර ඉංග්රීසි අක්ෂර තුළින් පරිවර්තනය වූවකි.
