කොලඹ ආනන්ද විද්යාලය, 1886යේ නොවැම්බර් මස පළමුවනදා අරඹන ලදී. කර්නල් හෙන්රි ස්ටීල් ඔල්කට් තුමාගේ ප්රධානත්වයෙන් යුත් පරමවිඥානාර්ථ බෞද්ධ සංගමය විසින් අරඹන ලද මෙම පාසල ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ප්රධානතම ආදිතම බෞද්ධ පාසල ලෙස සැලකේ. ආනන්ද විද්යාලය ජාතික පාසලකි.

ආනන්ද විද්යාලය අරඹන ලද්දේ පරමවිඥානාර්ථ බෞද්ධ සංගමය විසිනි. ආරම්භයේ දී මෙය ඉංග්රීසි බෞද්ධ පාසල ලෙස හඳුන්වන ලදී. එහි පරමාර්ථය වූයේ ඉංග්රීසි අධ්යාපනයක් ලැබීමට මිෂනාරි පාසල්වලට යාමට සිදුවන බෞද්ධ සිසුනට, බෞද්ධ පරිසරයක් තුළ ඉංග්රීසි බසින් ශිල්ප හැදෑරීමට අවකාශ සැලසීම යි. පිටකොටුවේ මැලිබන් වීදියේ අංක 61 පෞද්ගලික නිවසක සිසුන් 37 දෙනෙකු සඳහා 1886 නොවැම්බර් මස 1 වන දින විවෘත කරන ලද මෙම පාසලේ ආරම්භක විදුහල්පති වූයේ සී. ඩබ්ල්යු. ලෙඩ්බීටර් මහතාය. 1889 අගෝස්තු මාසයේ දී මෙම පාසල වඩා ඉඩ-කඩ ඇති ස්ථානයකට, එනම් කුමාර වීදියේ අංක 19 ස්ථානයට ගෙනයන ලදී. එ. ඊ. බූල්ට්ජෙන්ස් මහතා විදුහල්පති ලෙස කටයුතු කරන කාලයේ දී (1895දී) මෙම පාසැල මරදානට ගෙනයන ලදී. එදින මෙම පාසල ආනන්ද විද්යාලය; බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේගේ ධර්ම භාණ්ඩාගාරික ආනන්ද මහ තෙරුන්වහන්සේගේ නමින් නම් කරන ලදී...
[edit] වැදගත් සිදුවීම්
ආනන්ද විද්යාල ඉතිහාසයේ ඉතා වැදගත් ම සිදුවීමක් වන්නේ ආසියාවේ ප්රථම නොබෙල් ත්යාග ලාභියා වන , රබීන්ද්රනාථ් ථාගෝර් ශූරීන් ගේ පැමිණීම යි. එ 1922 නොවැම්බර් මස 10 වන දින පැවති වාර්ෂික ත්යාග ප්රදානෝත්සවයේ ප්රධාන අමුත්තා ලෙසට ය. එහි දී එතුමා පවසා සිටියේ: "I acknowledge that the life of Ananda is its humility and unassuming nature". Mahatma Gandhi visited Ananda in 1927.

Today Ananda College stands to be one of the greatest Buddhist schools in Asia, with a student population exceeding 7000 in all 13 grades of secondary education on a campus of over 20 acres. The academic staff of 200 + is led by the Principal, B.A. Abeyaratne. Over the years, Ananda has produced notable alumni and thus contributed immensely to Sri Lanka. These include statesman such as the current Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and former United National Party deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya, and famous cricketers Arjuna Ranatunga and Marvan Atapattu.
